I have many memories of my Dad laying face down on the floor in our loft in pain. He had thrown out his back again. For him, this was pretty ordinary. He trains dogs for a living, so he spends most of his time bent over to his left side with a dog leash in hand.
The spine is meant to bend, flex, extend and rotate, but this action over time, again and again, created an imbalance in his body that resulted in terrible posture, slipped discs, back spasms and constant pain.
I started working full time at a desk job at age 22, after a very active adolescence. Almost immediately, I started to experience chronic lower back pain.
Yes, the body is meant to sit, but sitting for 8 hours a day was a new movement pattern for me. At the time, I thought back pain was a given as we aged, but I couldn’t believe that I was having low back pain at age 22. If it hurts now, what will happen when I get to my Dad’s age? (No offense, Dad – you’re young at heart.)
This is how I found yoga. Over time, I gained a better understanding of my body and its tendencies – very flexible hamstrings, lordosis (too much curve) in my lower back, weak abdominals, tight calves, tight hip flexors – and I felt empowered to heal my physical body.
I know I’m not the only one with low back pain. Experts estimate that as much as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives.
We all deserve to live pain free, so that we can show up more fully for ourselves and each other.
I am now teaching yoga full time (something I’ve wanted to do for years!) and I’m offering private & semiprivate yoga classes at the studio or via Zoom with Maha’s new private monthly membership program. I’ve listed my current availability below:
